Confessions of an Aging Weeb

It's no lie that I haven't been watching anime as of late. Back in 2016, I thought that the best way for me to focus on my career was to cut everything out that didn't pertain to my job. That meant, anime, video games, and model kits, everything. I couldn't have been more mistaken. It was a painful experience to go through, but I think it made the lesson more apparent: It's the things that you like that give you the inspiration to do the things that have to do. I wish that I had realized that earlier on.

In 2018, I did something similar. Not quite the same, just similar. The situation was masked with a different excuse, that I would focus more on my relationship, focus more on my parents, focus more on the people that were important to me. A noble goal, but like with everything, one should always take things in moderation.

The way that I thought I could achieve that goal was by saving money which meant staying away from expensive hobbies. It’s also no lie that anime since the 90’s are not the cheap hobby that it once was in the early 2000’s. Everything from conventions, to the product, to the actual experience to watching the medium itself have become more expensive.

So while model kits were the first thing to go, anime quickly followed suit. If I don’t watch the commercials, I wouldn’t be enticed by the goods. But this lead down a dangerous rabbit hole. After anime, video games left  soon after and then card games.. I became a shell of my former self. I definitely saved a lot of money, but I lost the ability to connect with my friends and by extension, my family.

I think my first step for the new year is to get back to anime, to doing something that I love. I really do, at the bottom of my heart, love anime. It's a relationship that is difficult to put into words but it's a relationship that I feel like I should not abandon. So for 2019 I'm going to try to watch more anime more consistently and to integrate myself back into the community that I fell out of.

I just hope that they’ll take me back.

No one should give up their passions or what they love because they want to try to achieve a goal. You should always try to find a way do both.

I hope that the few reading this blog will find some value in what I’m writing. I know that the content isn’t super great and I have no intention of becoming viral. Just like Gigguk, I want to be able to create content that I can be proud of and something that I can enjoy. It's going to be a slow grind, but I think its worth the effort.

I'm sure I'll get there.

As always Gigguk does a fantastic job with his videos and I highly encourage you to check out the one that he has shown below. For those that don't want to watch the whole video, a list of the anime he mentions will be provided at the bottom of the article.

  1. Greetings from Northern California!

Your scanlation of Gundam Build Fighters A led me to your blog.

I'm glad that you've found your way back to the things that you once enjoyed.

Add Rising of Shield Hero to your list.
